How to Create GRP Corners for Your Roofing Project

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) corner pieces are an essential part of any roofing project and are used to provide a watertight seal between two sections of the roof. If you’re looking for a way to make your roof more durable and weather-resistant then creating GRP corners is the perfect solution. Read on to learn how you can create your own GRP corners at home.

Get the Right Supplies

The first step in creating your own GRP corners is to make sure that you have all the necessary supplies on hand. You will need a container of polyester resin, some hardener, a few brushes, a pair of rubber gloves, and some fibreglass matting. Make sure that you have enough supplies on hand—you don’t want to run out in the middle of your project!

Mix the Resin and Hardener

Once you have all of your supplies ready, it’s time to mix together some resin and hardener. The ratio should be two parts resin with one part hardener. Make sure to mix them together thoroughly so that there are no lumps or bumps; this will ensure that the finished product is smooth and professional-looking. Once everything is mixed up, set it aside for now.

Cut Out Your Corner Pieces

Now it’s time to cut out the corner pieces from your fibreglass matting. For this step, you will need a sharp knife or scissors in order to get a clean cut without any fraying or tearing on the edges. Cut out two identical pieces for each corner—these pieces should be big enough so that they extend beyond where the corner meets the wall by at least an inch or two in each direction.   Now take one piece and put it into place on top of where your corner will go; use masking tape to keep it secure while you work on applying the resin mixture over top of it.

Apply Resin Mixture

Put on your rubber gloves before starting this step—the resin mixture can be quite sticky! Once you’re ready, use a brush to spread an even layer of the mixture over top of both pieces of fibreglass matting until they are completely coated; make sure not to miss any spots! Allow this layer to dry before continuing on with this project.

Attach Corner Pieces

When both layers are dry, remove them from their support surfaces and position them next to each other so that they form an L-shape (or whatever shape is appropriate for your roof). Use masking tape again here, if necessary, in order to keep them securely in place while you work on attaching them together using more resin mixture. Once they are secured together, allow them another round of drying before continuing onto the next steps.

Final Touches

Now that all four sides have been created and attached together securely using resin mixture, it’s time for final touches! Go back over all four sides with another coat (or two!) of resin mixture just make sure that everything is completely sealed off from moisture intrusion from outside elements such as rain or snowfall. Once everything has dried one final time, it is complete! You can now start installing your newly-crafted GRP corners onto your roofing project as needed – enjoy!
